What Are Bible Codes?

4–6 minutes

By Connie Swofford

What are the Bible codes? Most people do not realize that they even exist. Are these Bible codes one of the many things that were spoken of in the book of Daniel? Were they hidden for millennia waiting for a time when “knowledge shall be increased?”

Bible codes are words and phrases embedded in the old and new testaments. These messages can be discovered by searching the original Hebrew and Greek text at equidistant intervals. I remember in the 90’s when my Father, Reverend Sonny Stephens, would search for these hidden Bible codes within the Hebrew text by hand. There were times that he would enlist my help by showing me the Hebrew symbol I was looking for and the interval to count. It was a tedious trial and error process.

Bible code research has come a long way since those days. Today, computers make the searching faster than we could have ever imagined all of those years ago. The number of people searching the Hebrew text for these answers may still be quite limited but, interest in this research is growing.

What is an example of a Bible code? In the passages of Isaiah 52-53 you can find the words: Jesus, Disciples, and the names of all the original twelve Disciples minus one – Judas, and Matthias who was later chosen to take his place. What is the mathematical probability of anyone encoding this kind of information in a single book? Mathematically speaking, impossible. To do so roughly 700-800 years prior to any of the people mentioned being born would add a whole new layer of improbability.

Something that is important to note about Bible codes is that the surface text where the codes appear is no more a coincidence than the code itself. Do you remember what Isaiah chapters 52-53 discuss?

This text In Isaiah sounds conspicuously like the role these twelve men would play in the history of the world hundreds of years later. They were commissioned to bring the “good news, proclaiming salvation” to the ends of the earth.

Jesus paid the debt for our sin. He was ”wounded for our transgressions.”

What does the existence of Bible codes prove? Two things, that “All Scripture is God-breathed,” and that not “one jot or one tittle” will be lost from the Scriptures until the day they are fulfilled. Many people do not realize that the Bible was stripped in the 1800’s by men who wanted to support Darwin and his theory of evolution.

As a result many modern Biblical texts are missing verses, or even chapters, or have grossly rewritten translations that do not hold to the original meaning of the texts. But, according to Jesus’ promise not “one jot or tittle” would be lost. This tells us that the true, original text and meaning remains to this day.

If for any reason you have never called on the name of Jesus, here is what I know to be true:

Have you made that choice? If you need Christ Jesus in your life, simply pray for Him to come into your heart. Ask Him to forgive you of your sins. He will make you a new creation in Him.
